Growing flowers for cutting from seed is more popular than ever according to Johnsons.

Its top ten best-selling flowers in the 2016 season includes two sunflowers, two sweet peas, a cornflower and a cosmos. The overall best-seller was Sunny Giant sunflowers from the company's Little Gardeners range for youngsters who show an interest in growing plants, while sunflower Giant Single was in second place.

Sweet peas Giant Waved Mixed and Old Fashioned Mixed were in fourth and sixth places respectively, with cornflower Double Blue and Cosmos Sensation Mixed in eighth and ninth spots.

The company's Helen Clayton reports other sweet peas and cosmos varieties were also strong sellers during 2016. "Sales of flowers suitable for cutting continue to rise", says Helen, "as an increasing number of people appreciate having attractive displays in their homes. Sunflowers, sweet peas, cornflower and cosmos are all easily grown annuals, so can be raised with very little fuss".
